What is Jyotish?
Jyotish (ज्योतिष), often called Vedic Astrology, is the ancient Indian science of light — the study of how the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars at the moment of birth influence life on Earth. Considered one of the six Vedangas (limbs of the Vedas), it has been practised for thousands of years to understand personality, timing of events, compatibility and remedies.
Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac, Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac — measured against the fixed stars. The difference between the two systems is corrected by the ayanamsha. PanchangPath uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha, the standard adopted by the Government of India.
The core building blocks are the 12 rashis (signs), 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), 9 grahas (planets including Rahu & Ketu) and 12 bhavas (houses). The calculators above let you explore each of these for your own birth details.
