Samagri (Materials Needed)

करवा (मिट्टी अथवा पीतल का पात्र), ढक्कन सहित
छलनी (चांद देखने हेतु)
गौरी माता की मूर्ति/चित्र
लाल चुनरी, सुहाग की सामग्री (चूड़ी, बिंदी, सिंदूर, मेहंदी)
मिठाई, फल, हलवा-पूरी
रोली, चावल, दीपक, घी
जल से भरा लोटा
अगरबत्ती, धूप

Step-by-Step Vidhi

1. Wake before sunrise and eat Sargi (a pre-dawn meal, often given by the mother-in-law) before beginning the nirjala (waterless) fast. 2. In the afternoon, gather with other women to listen to the Karva Chauth Katha, seated in a circle passing a plate with puja items. 3. Worship Gauri Mata (or Shiva-Parvati) with roli, akshat, flowers and offer the suhaag items symbolically to the goddess. 4. At moonrise, go outdoors, view the moon through a sieve, offer it arghya (water), then view your husband's face through the same sieve. 5. The husband offers the first sip of water and a bite of food to break the fast, followed by the festive meal.

Auspicious Timing & Mantras

Performed on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, with the moon-sighting timing varying by location (typically published in local Panchang tables). Chant "Om Shivayai Namah" or recite the Karva Chauth Katha. Observed by married women for their husband's long life and well-being.
