Samagri (Materials Needed)
राखी (रक्षा सूत्र) थाली (रोली, चावल, दीपक, मिठाई सहित) नारियल रुमाल/कपड़ा (राखी बांधने हेतु)
Rakhi (sacred protection thread) Thali (with roli, rice, diya, sweets) Coconut Handkerchief/cloth (for tying the rakhi)
Step-by-Step Vidhi
1. Prepare a puja thali with a lit diya, roli, akshat (rice) and sweets. 2. The sister first performs a short aarti for her brother and applies a tilak of roli and rice on his forehead. 3. She ties the rakhi (sacred thread) on his right wrist while reciting a prayer for his well-being, traditionally accompanied by the verse "Yena Baddho Balee Raja..." recalling how the same thread once bound the demon king Bali. 4. She feeds him a sweet, and in return, the brother offers a gift and formally vows to protect and support his sister throughout life.
Auspicious Timing & Mantras
Performed on Shravan Purnima, ideally avoiding Bhadra Kaal (considered inauspicious for tying rakhi) — the exact muhurat window is published each year in the Panchang. Celebrates and formalizes the protective bond between brothers and sisters.
